What do South African businesses actually ask about AI?

The same seven things: what it costs in rands, how long it takes to work, whether it replaces people, whether it is legal under POPIA, what happens when it does not know an answer, whether they can leave, and how to tell a real supplier from a good deck. All 40 of them are answered on this page.

Nothing here is behind a form and nothing here is a range that turns into a phone call. Where an answer involves a price, the figure is read from the same source our checkout charges from.

Every answer is in the page whether the row is open or shut — nothing here is loaded later or hidden from anything reading it.

Ours starts at R299 a month with a once-off R250 setup fee, so R549 is what leaves your account on day one and R299 every month after that. The top self-serve rung is R2 500 a month. Every figure is in rands and published, not quoted behind a sales call.

Yes, once, and it is charged with your first month in a single payment. It pays for building the thing: reading your site, training the model on your prices and services, wiring it into your platform and testing it before it answers a real customer. It is never charged again and it is never discounted.

No. Month-to-month. Cancel anytime. No contracts. You pay for a month, you get a month, and you can stop at the end of any month you have paid for. There is no minimum term, no notice period and no cancellation fee on any product we sell. In a market moving this fast, a long commitment is a bet you have no reason to make.

Nothing breaks and nothing is charged automatically. Each plan has a monthly allowance and you can buy a one-off top-up pack if you need more, priced so that the bigger the pack the lower the cost per message. A top-up is a once-off purchase — it does not change your plan or your monthly allowance.

Rands, always, on every product. That matters more than it sounds: a dollar price is a price that changes every time the exchange rate does, without anybody telling you, and a bad month for the rand becomes a bad month for your software bill. Nothing we charge moves with the exchange rate.

Bookkeeping & Invoice+Quote Generation at R80 a month with no setup fee at all. It is a real product rather than a stripped demonstration: quotes and invoices out the same day, with the numbers kept in order behind them. The cheapest chatbot rung is R299 a month.

On the website chatbot there are two, and only two: pay for a year up front, or skip the free trial on one of the two entry rungs if you have never trialled. They add together up to a ceiling and they apply to the monthly fee only — setup is never discounted. No other product has a discount, an annual option or a negotiable price.

Every price, in the open

Live in 30 minutes, Mon–Fri 08:00–16:30 SAST. Outside that window, 08:30 the next business day. It is not a figure of speech: the build is automated, so the wait is the machine working rather than a person finding a slot in their week. Website Design and Property Firm Automation are the two exceptions, because both involve real build work.

Your website address, what you sell, your prices if you publish them, and an email address to send the login to. That is the whole list. If you have a price list, an FAQ or a services page, the build reads them so you do not have to retype anything you have already written down somewhere.

No. On WordPress there is a plugin you install from inside WordPress itself, and on Wix there is an app you add from the Wix dashboard — neither pastes anything into your site. On anything else it is one line of code in your page template, and we show you exactly where it goes for your platform.

If your site can hold one line of HTML, yes. The setup step detects what your site runs on and shows you the path for it. If somebody else looks after your website, there is a message you can copy and send them with the exact line and the exact place it goes — you do not have to explain any of it yourself.

On the website chatbot, yes: 7-day free trial · 50 messages · no card required. That is the only product with a free trial, and it is one per business. Everything else is bought outright and cancellable at the end of any month, which is the same protection by a different route. There is also a live demo you can talk to without giving us anything.

You get an email with a link to your own dashboard and a PIN. Inside it you can read every conversation, see the leads it captured, change what it says and turn it off. Nothing is hidden behind a support ticket, and your data is yours to ask for from the first day rather than the day you decide to leave.

Start now

Not the people. It replaces the part of their day that is repetition — the same five questions, the after-hours enquiry, the reminder nobody sent. What it cannot do is judgement, a complaint, or a customer who needs to be heard rather than answered. Businesses that use it well put it in front of the routine and leave people the rest.

For your own writing, often yes, and you should. It is a different purchase, though: ChatGPT helps YOU while you are at the keyboard. It does not sit on your website knowing your prices and your stock, it does not answer the enquiry that arrived while you were asleep, and it is priced per person rather than per business.

It says so and hands over, which is the single most important thing to get right. A bot that guesses is worse than no bot, because a confident wrong answer about a price or a lead time costs you the customer and the trust. Ours is built to escalate rather than improvise, and you can read every handover.

It answers from what you gave it, so it is wrong exactly when your source is wrong or out of date. That is why the dashboard lets you correct what it knows in seconds rather than through us. Anything it is unsure of goes to a person instead of being invented, and you can see every answer it gave.

It uses the conversation it is in to answer that customer well. It is not training a general model on your customers, and your conversations are not pooled with anybody else’s. What you can do is read them: the questions people actually ask are usually the most useful thing the whole system produces.

Whichever job has a number attached to it. The enquiry nobody answers is normally first, because it is countable, immediate and the cheapest to fix. Quoting is often second. Anything you cannot measure should wait — an unmeasurable subscription is how a small business ends up paying for four tools it has forgotten about.

The full guide

A chat window on your own site, trained on your business rather than on the internet in general. It answers questions about what you sell, what it costs and how to buy it, captures the person’s details, and passes anything it should not handle to you. It works at any hour and it answers everybody at once.

Live chat is a person typing. It is better at judgement and it only works while somebody is on shift, and it queues when several people arrive together. A chatbot answers everyone immediately at any hour and hands over what it should not touch. Most businesses that run both put the bot first and the person second.

Yes to both. Capturing the name, the number and what the person wanted is the default on every plan, and it lands in your dashboard the moment the conversation ends. Taking an actual booking against a real calendar is what the Booking product is for, and the two work together when a business has both.

It handles all 11 official South African languages, and it replies in whichever one the customer wrote in without being told to switch. Our own support is in English and Afrikaans. Language coverage on a feature page is easy; what a customer notices is whether the reply reads like a person from here wrote it.

Yes. It does not run on anything in your building, so your power going off does not take it down — which is precisely when a customer finds your website on their phone and nobody in your office can answer. That is one of the few genuinely South African arguments for automating the first reply.

Yes, and it should. You choose what triggers it — a complaint, a request for a person, a question it is not confident about — and the conversation is passed on with everything the customer already said, so nobody has to start again. Every handover is visible in your dashboard afterwards.

Everything about the chatbot

Yes. POPIA does not ban automated processing; it governs how you collect, store and use personal information whoever or whatever collects it. What it requires is a lawful reason, a clear purpose, no more data than you need, and a way for people to ask what you hold. A chatbot is subject to those rules exactly like a contact form.

On infrastructure we run, and you can export all of it whenever you want. The practical difference with a foreign platform is not usually the server’s address — it is who you complain to. With a South African supplier the Information Regulator is the same regulator for both of us, and the contract is under South African law.

POPIA has no clause that says so in those words, but it is the right answer anyway and it costs you nothing. People work it out, and a bot that dodges the question reads as dishonest about everything else it said. Ours does not pretend to be a person, and it will not claim to be one if asked.

Yes. Ask, and your conversations, your captured leads and your content come back in a portable format you can open — there is a standing request form for exactly this on our data rights page. Being able to leave is the only thing that keeps any supplier honest, including us.

You are, for your own customers’ data. POPIA makes the responsible party accountable, and in this arrangement that is your business — we operate the system on your behalf. Nothing about using a supplier moves that duty off you, which is why it is worth knowing where the data goes before you sign anything.

How we handle data

Ask four questions and ignore the feature table. Is the price in rands or dollars? Is there a contract? Can I export my own data and leave? Who answers when it breaks at 16:00 on a Friday? Those four separate suppliers faster than any comparison chart, and none of the answers goes out of date.

A price you can only get on a call. A long minimum term on a product that installs in an afternoon. A demo that is a video rather than something you can talk to. No way to get your own data out. And a promise about results, phrased as a number, that nobody could have measured before knowing your business.

An overseas platform is usually more mature and has a bigger marketplace. A local one bills in rands, works your hours, is under the same regulator you are, and tunes the writing for how South Africans actually type. If your customers are here, the second list matters more than the first for the money involved.

What exactly is the monthly figure and what is once-off. What happens if I go over the allowance. What is the notice period. What do I get out if I leave. Who is on the other end of support and in which time zone. If any of those five takes more than a sentence to answer, that is your answer.

Count one thing before you start and the same thing afterwards: enquiries received, or enquiries you never replied to. Everything else — sentiment, engagement, time saved — is either unmeasurable or easy to tell a flattering story about. If nobody can name the number that should move, do not buy it yet.

Compare the options

10 products: Website Chatbot, Email AI Bot, Mass Email, Lead Generation, Booking Systems, Bookkeeping & Invoice+Quote Generation, Website Design, Custom AI, Property Firm Automation and Property Agent Automation. 8 of them have their price published on the pricing page rather than quoted on a call. The other 2 are quoted from scope — a bespoke build has no list price, and one product is sold by request rather than through a checkout.

7 Hanz Coetzee Avenue, Vanderbijlpark, 1911, Gauteng, South Africa. It is a registered South African company, CIPC 2026/041829/07, founded in January 2026. The address and the registration number are on every page of this site, because a company founded this year should be easy to check rather than difficult.

The whole country, and the delivery time and the price are identical everywhere. There is no travel charge, no regional pricing and no reason for either — none of this needs anybody to drive anywhere. We are asked for it most often from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha and the Vaal Triangle.

Yes, and it is quoted from scope rather than sold from a page — the range runs from a few hundred rand for something small to six figures for an internal system. If what you need is one of the ten products, buy that instead: it is cheaper, it is live the same day, and it is already tested.

Email sales@doubledownai.co.za or use the WhatsApp number on the contact page, +27 76 847 0371. A person answers during South African business hours. The chatbot on this site will answer you at any hour and will hand you to a person rather than guess, which is the same rule we build into every one we sell.

If you want more than a paragraph

Each of these has a page or a post behind it. The AI automation guide is the long version of the whole subject. Compare the options puts a chatbot, live chat, a form and a person in one table. The glossary explains the words. Why a South African supplier covers the rands, POPIA and support-hours argument in full.

On the specifics: what an AI chatbot costs, AI and POPIA compliance, whether AI can replace a receptionist, a chatbot against live chat, and what AI automation actually means if you are starting from nothing.

If your question is not here

Ask it. The chatbot on this page answers at any hour and hands you to a person rather than guessing, and the contact page has the email and the WhatsApp number. If it is a question other people are likely to have too, it ends up on this page.
