How Much Does an AI Chatbot Cost in South Africa? (2026 Pricing Guide)

How much does an AI chatbot cost in South Africa?

A website chatbot in South Africa costs from R299 a month plus a R250 once-off setup, priced in rands with no contract. Larger plans run R649 and R1 199 a month. DoubleDown AI publishes every price before you pay and installs in about 30 minutes.

Checkout takes the setup fee and the first month together; the monthly then runs by debit order and can be cancelled at any time.

An AI website chatbot in South Africa costs between roughly R300 and R3 000 a month, plus a once-off setup fee of a few hundred to a few thousand rand. The spread is that wide because "chatbot" covers everything from a scripted FAQ widget to a system that books appointments and takes payment. This page explains what you actually get at each price point, what moves the number, and the costs that are usually left out of the quote.

What does an AI chatbot cost per month?

Priced honestly, a website chatbot sits in one of four bands. The difference between them is not how clever the AI is — every provider is using the same handful of underlying models — but how much of your business the bot is connected to, and how much of the work it is allowed to finish on its own.

What you are buying What it can actually do DoubleDown AI
Entry Answers questions from your own content, captures a name and a number, hands over to a person when it is out of its depth. R299/month + R250 setup (R549 at checkout)
Mid Adds booking into a real calendar, lead scoring, and a connection to the CRM or inbox you already use. R649/month + R300 setup
Higher volume Handles heavier enquiry volume, qualifies properly before handing over, and integrates with more than one internal system. R1 199/month + R395 setup
Custom Bespoke flows, multiple brands, deep integration with an ERP or an internal database. Scoped and quoted per project. From R2 500/month, quoted from scope

Those are our published prices, in rands, and they are the same ones the checkout charges. It is worth saying plainly because it is not the norm: a large share of the chatbot market quotes only on request, and a price you have to ask for is usually a price that varies by who is asking.

Why is the price range so wide?

Five things move the number, and only one of them is the AI itself.

  • Conversation volume. Every message costs the provider something to process. A bot answering thirty enquiries a month and one answering three thousand are not the same product, and any plan without a stated monthly allowance is hiding this rather than solving it.
  • Integrations. Each calendar, CRM or payment gateway is real build work. This is usually the largest single component of a setup fee, and it is the thing most likely to be quoted vaguely.
  • Channels. A bot on your website and a bot answering email are two builds, not one with a switch flipped.
  • How much it is allowed to finish. A bot that answers is cheap. A bot that books, takes a deposit and writes the record is more expensive, and is the one that actually removes work.
  • Support. Best-effort email support and a same-day commitment are different costs, and the difference only shows up on the day something breaks.

What costs are usually left out of the quote?

The monthly figure is the part everybody advertises. These are the parts that decide what you actually pay over a year.

  • The setup fee. Ask for it as a number before you compare monthlies. A low monthly attached to a large build fee is a more expensive first year than the reverse.
  • Overage. Find out what happens on the message after your allowance runs out. Some providers throttle, some bill, and some simply stop answering your customers.
  • The exchange rate. A price quoted in US dollars is a price that changes every time the rand does, without anyone telling you. Everything on this site is priced in rands and does not move with the currency.
  • The contract. An annual commitment is common, and it is the cost you notice only when the thing is not working. Ours is month-to-month.
  • Who does the work. Some prices assume you will configure it. If your team has to spend a week on it, that week is part of the price.

Is a cheaper chatbot worse?

Not necessarily, and this is where most comparisons go wrong. A cheap bot that answers your twenty most common questions accurately, all night, is worth more than an expensive one nobody finished configuring. The failure mode at the low end is not stupidity — it is a bot that was never connected to anything, so it answers and then asks the customer to fill in a form anyway.

The question worth asking a supplier is not how advanced the model is. It is: what is this allowed to finish without a person? That single answer explains almost the entire price range above.

How do I work out whether it pays for itself?

Turn the price into a number of customers. If your average job is worth R2 000 and the bot captures one enquiry a month that would otherwise have left your site at 22:00, an entry-level plan has paid for itself several times over. If your average job is worth R150 and you get four enquiries a week, it has not, and a booking system or a better contact form is the honest recommendation.

Payback is the metric, not price. Work it out with your own numbers before you take anybody's — including ours.

Is there a free AI chatbot for a South African business?

There are free tiers, and they are genuinely useful for finding out whether a chatbot suits your traffic at all. What they generally do not include is training on your own content, a connection to your calendar or CRM, or anybody to call. They are a way to test the idea rather than a way to run it.

We offer a free trial on the Website Chatbot — fifty messages, no card, one per business — for the same reason: the fastest way to find out whether this works on your site is to put it on your site.

What should I have ready before asking for a quote?

Four things, and having them turns a vague quote into a comparable one:

  • Roughly how many enquiries you get a month, across every channel.
  • The systems it must talk to — calendar, CRM, invoicing, whatever holds your prices.
  • The five questions you answer most often, word for word as customers ask them.
  • What "done" looks like: answered, or booked, or paid.
Almost every disappointing chatbot project is a scoping failure rather than a technology one. The bot did exactly what it was connected to do, and nobody had agreed what that was.

What does DoubleDown AI charge?

Our Website Chatbot starts at R299 a month with a R250 once-off setup fee — R549 taken together at checkout, then the monthly a calendar month later. It is month-to-month with no contract, priced in rands, and it goes live in about thirty minutes during South African business hours. Every tier and every allowance is published on the pricing page, and the machine-readable version is at pricing.md if you would rather read it that way.
