Why use a South African AI company instead of an overseas platform?

A South African supplier bills in rands so your cost does not move with the exchange rate, works South African business hours, is governed by South African law and the Information Regulator under POPIA, and tunes the AI for the way South Africans actually write. An overseas platform is usually more mature and has a bigger marketplace.

The honest comparison

Three ways to solve this.
Here is all three.

No brand names and no competitor prices — those go stale and we would be quoting somebody else’s numbers. This is the shape of each option, using the Website Chatbot as the reference product.

The real questions

Local or overseas,
answered.

It depends on which risks matter to you. An overseas platform is usually more mature and has a bigger integrations marketplace. A local supplier bills in rands so your cost does not move with the exchange rate, works your business hours, is governed by South African law, and can be held to POPIA by the Information Regulator. For a business selling mainly to South Africans, those usually matter more than the marketplace.

A price in US dollars is a price that changes every time the rand does, without anybody telling you. Budgeting becomes guesswork and a bad quarter for the currency is a cost increase you did not agree to. Everything DoubleDown AI charges is in rands and does not move with the exchange rate.

POPIA applies to you regardless of where your supplier sits. You remain responsible for the personal information your systems collect, and your Information Officer is still accountable for it. What changes is how hard it is to exercise that responsibility when the data lives under another country’s law.

Most large models can produce text in several South African languages, but very few products are tuned for local phrasing, code-switching or the way South Africans actually write to a business. That gap is what a customer notices, not the language list on a feature page.

South African Standard Time is UTC+2 with no daylight saving, so our business day overlaps only partly with Europe and barely with North America. A support desk in another time zone means the fault is looked at tomorrow. Ours is South African hours, on WhatsApp.
