DoubleDown AI vs Tidio — the short answer

Tidio is an established international platform billed in US dollars and metered by conversation, with a free tier. DoubleDown AI is a South African product billed in rands from R299 a month, metered by message, trained in all eleven official languages and supported on a local number. If your customers are South African, the currency and the languages are the difference that compounds.

The part nobody prices in

The dollar price
is not the price.

What a dollar subscription actually costs you

A subscription quoted in dollars is a rand cost that changes every month without anyone sending you an email about it. Over a year that is the difference between a line item you can budget and one you cannot. It applies to every dollar-priced tool, including the ones we are not comparing against here.

It cuts both ways and we should say so: when the rand strengthens, a dollar subscription gets cheaper. The point is not that dollars are worse. It is that you are carrying an exposure you did not choose, on a tool that costs less than a phone contract.

The other side

Where they beat us.

What they do better

Tidio has been doing this far longer than we have, has a free tier we do not offer, and has an integration marketplace we cannot match. If you want a mature international platform and the dollar exposure does not bother you, it is a good product and you should buy it.

We are a South African company registered in January 2026, so we are young, and we would rather you read that here than find it out later. What we can put in writing is narrow and checkable: every price is published in rands before you pay, there is no minimum term on any plan, and the website chatbot has a free 50-message trial that does not ask for a card.

If what you need is a large marketplace of integrations and a decade of product maturity, buy the international one. If what you need is a chatbot that answers your customers in your languages, bills in your currency and has a person on a local number when it goes wrong, that is the thing we built.

Where these figures come from

Every Tidio figure on this page was read from https://www.tidio.com/pricing/ on 25 August 2026, and is quoted in US dollars exactly as published there — nothing is converted, estimated or remembered. Prices change without notice, so check that link before you rely on anything here. If you find a figure that has moved, tell us and we will fix it.

The real questions

Asked before
anybody switches.

It depends what you are buying and on the exchange rate on the day. Tidio’s Starter plan was listed at $24.17 a month for 100 billable conversations on 25 August 2026; ours starts at R299 a month with R250 setup. The difference that does not move is the currency: a dollar subscription re-prices itself in rands every month whether or not anyone tells you, and a rand one does not.

Tidio meters billable conversations — the plan sets how many conversations are billable each month. Ours meters messages against a monthly allowance with optional top-up packs on the higher plans. Neither is wrong; they bill differently, and which is cheaper depends entirely on whether your visitors ask one question or twenty.

Yes — $0 with 50 billable conversations a month as listed on 25 August 2026, which is a genuine advantage if your volume is very low. We do not have a permanent free plan. We have a free 50-message trial with no card, which is a different thing and we would rather say so plainly.

Yes, and there is nothing to migrate in the usual sense: the chatbot is trained on your own documents and your website, so you hand those over rather than exporting anything. Your past conversation history stays with Tidio — ask them for an export before you cancel, because that is the part nobody thinks about until it is gone.

For some things measurably, for others not at all. Better: rand pricing, South African business hours, the same regulator you answer to under POPIA, and eleven official languages trained natively. Not better: an international platform has a far larger integration marketplace and years more product behind it. Pick on which list matters for the money you are spending.
